The Toltecs were an ancient race whose wisdom remains with us today, thanks in part to people such as Don Miguel Ruiz whose writing and teaching keeps their words alive.
Whether we know it or not, we play our lives out according to principles that often get passed on through the culture in which we live. Some are useful, some can limit our potential. Principles are powerful because they literally underpin the way that we see the world and the choices that we make, often without us realising it. That’s why it’s important to actively choose the principles by which we live.
I often find myself quoting from Don Miguel Ruiz’ book, ‘The Four Agreements’, in which he talks about the Toltec principles or shared agreements for living. It’s one of those ‘if you just did this and nothing else, your life would change’ kind of books. Each principle alone can transform your life. Together, they will help you wake up to your true power. So here they are.
1. Be Impeccable With Your Word
Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love. Words are our power and our magic, they weave our reality. One principle I try to stick to is only talk about someone in a way you would speak to their face. If a person heard you talk about them would you be embarrassed by what you said? The internet has added a dimension to this, many people on the net turn into ‘trolls’ or ‘haters’ and speak in a way they would never do in real life. Speaking badly of another is potent magic which ultimately weaves back to the speaker. Use your words as power and you life will truly change.
2. Don’t Take Anything Personally
Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.
3. Don’t Make Assumptions
Often we assume things but we are way off the mark. If we make assumptions and they are not true we live our life in illusion and upset people who feel misjudged. Assumptions are illusions! Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.
4. Always Do Your Best
Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret.
